SEO + Meta

The information that you provide in a meta tag is used by search engines to index a page so that someone searching for the kind of information the page contains will be able to find it.

There are several types of meta tags, but the most important among these are the keywords meta tag and the description meta tag.

We suggest that you fill out this part of the Page Settings on all top level pages of your site.

Keywords

Keywords are what they sound like, the keywords one would use to search for your site. Keywords should include things like location and services that you provide. Input your keywords/phrases and separate them with a comma.

If you were an exotic pet store in the Oklahoma City metro area, some keywords might be...

  • oklahoma city
  • okc
  • edmond
  • fish
  • lizards
  • exotic pet store
  • pets for sale
  • ball python
  • rabbits

...and so on. We recommend about 10-30 keywords.

Also, your keywords on interior pages can and should be more customized to the content. So whereas the previous list might be on the homepage, for a page specific to fish, you might discuss specific terms for that area.

  • Freshwater fish
  • Saltwater Fish

Description

This is generally where search engines get the blurb from when they display a site.

Following with the exotic pet store example, we might use something like...

"Harry's Exotic Fish and Pets is your one stop shop for all things unique and new. Come visit any of our Oklahoma City metro locations for your pet needs."

We generally recommend 30-50 words for your description.
